Surviving Unemployment Through Emotional Damage Control

By Virginia Bola, PsyD Looking for work is a roller-coaster ride: high with elation when you think you’ve found a great position, low with discouragement when you realize that someone else was offered a job you wanted. Most of the time, you fall somewhere in between, your mood cycling from cautious optimism to keen disappointment. You try to conceal the inner turmoil, turning a brave face to the world, trying to convince everyone that you are “just fine.” For the sake of your health and your sanity, try these approaches: 1. Identify someone who is willing to be a sounding board for you: your significant other, a fellow job seeker, a career counselor, a good friend. Explain that you need someone to help you express the feelings inside and gain a better understanding of what is happening to you emotionally. Then talk to them, for a few minutes. You don’t want to become a burden and your listener is not a paid therapist. Ten minutes of honest revelation and analysis a few times per week can help you avoid ulcers, family fights growing out of your frustration, self-isolation, and will free up the energy it takes to hold everything in. That is energy you need to conserve for job search. 2. Start a journal, if you don’t already have one. Chronicle your activities, how you feel while doing them, and how you feel afterwards. Sex in the Garden, Part 2

Burns I need to make a disclaimer here before I go any further on the subject of asexual reproduction: Like any clone, the clones that you create, will have the genes of the parent, and will consequently have all the good and bad characteristics of the parent plant. If you have a disease problem with one, it will also attack the others! The more “specific” any line becomes, the more susceptible it becomes. The Irish potato famine and the North American Chestnut blight are good examples. It is ok to reproduce your plants this way, but always understand the need to keep some diversity in your garden, and don’t put all your genes in one basket. “Variatiodelectat”- “Variety is the spice of life”. Now, A “hardwood” cutting works well with crepe myrtles, (softwood cuttings of many species can be rooted in a glass of water) hardwood is wood that has become, well, hard, or “herbaceous”. There are many theories on when the best time to take a cutting is, but with the crepes, and good watering conditions, I have done this year round. Make sure that your soil is prepared beforehand, and you can use a “dibble stick”, to poke a hole for planting. Good, sharp pruners are a must, and freshly cut branches are a must. Take a cutting, about 4 to 6 inches long, with a bud node about a quarter of an inch from the bottom, and a couple of buds on the higher part of the cutting. Do this at an angle. Check your cutting, ragged edges almost insure a less than satisfactory outcome. I keep a sharp knife handy, to trim any ragged edges away. If you are using rooting hormone, dip the big end into it. Then place it into your planting hole in your soil. Gently pack and repeat, until you get the numbers of cuttings you need. Always do a few extras, because you will lose some of them. Water well, and make sure they never dry out completely. As time goes by, you will see shoots developing, and hopefully the roots are doing the same. Callous will develop on the bottom first, followed by adventitious roots. Leave them in the planting medium for the first year, and then transplant them into pots or the ground. As you watch them grow, pat yourself on the back. You have done something that is a tradition as old as mankind, and as new as genetic engineering. Enjoy! Bad Hires: Seven Ways to Avoid Doing It Again

The resume looked good, the candidate seemed to interview well he or she said all the right things yet after you made the hire you realized you made a big mistake. How could that happen? What went wrong? Recruiting good candidates is not an easy task for any manager. The process is complicated. Candidates often know what to say and do to get the job. And the process is going to get more difficult. As the economy continues to improve, your current employees who were concerned about changing jobs during the recent recession are now starting to look for other opportunities. According to a recent America Online study, 58 percent of the 5,000 respondents said they may or definitely will start a job search when the economy improves. At the same time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports by the year 2010, we will be short 10 million workers in the United States alone. So what should you do? Make recruitment the focus of everyone in the organization. But just saying that everyone should be involved won’t get it done. As with all things, when managers spotlight an issue and measure the results, good things often happen. So here are seven additional secrets to improve your overall recruitment program: Look at your organization. Ask yourself, why would anyone want to work here? Why do you? What makes your organization attractive? Organizations are good at promoting themselves as part of the sales process, and you should do the same with recruitment. In recruitment, you are selling the organization to prospective employees. So take a hard look at the things that distinguish your organization and promote them. Show candidates why they should want to work for you. At the same time, if there are skeletons in your closet (e.g. recent layoffs or bad publicity) be prepared to address them in the job interview. Good candidates do their homework, and they will probably know about this. Profile your ideal candidate. This sounds simple, but so often employers do not know which candidate will be successful in their organization and which one will fail. Knowing this is critical. Often we start the recruitment process without truly understanding what we are looking for. Job descriptions are helpful. They define the education, experience and tasks the new hire will perform. What they do not do is identify the traits, those qualitative factors that tell you who will fit and who will not. To do this, ask yourself these questions: What type of person is most successful in our organization? What type isn’t? A good tip is to profile your most successful employees. What makes them successful? Get your employees involved in this process. They often have great insights. Know where the candidates are. Successful fishermen know where and when the fish are biting. Successful recruitment requires you to do the same. Ask yourself, if I’m looking for an engineer, where would I find one? The answer could be companies similar to yours; your competitors; professional associations; engineering schools, etc. In other words, it isn’t just the help-wanted pages or the Internet. Think creatively, think differently. Interview right. Prepare for the interview. Formulate questions beforehand that explore ability, potential and fit. Ask behavioral-oriented questions, which are questions that require a response based on actual experience. Probe until you are sure that you have all the information you need. Listen to what the candidate says and how he says it. Ask the candidate if he or she has any questions. The questions they have will tell you a lot about them and what is important to them. Resist the temptation to fill the job quickly. Don’t blame mistakes on the labor pool. Don’t hire until you are sure you have the right one. Trust your gut. Listen and watch for red flags those signs that tell you something is not right here. People decisions are significant they affect the overall morale, culture and capacity of the organization. You know the expression about the one bad apple. Always check references. You learn a lot from reference checking. Listen to what is being said and how it is said. Make your final evaluation. Ask yourself: Can he do the job? Will she be accepted? Will he fit? Is she interested? What is the likelihood that he will stay? Will outside factors interfere with her performance? Utilizing these seven secrets will have a greater impact on your bottom line then most anything else you do. They are not easy to implement, but effectively using them will be your competitive advantage. Study in USA, Get A Student Visa (F-1 Visa)

Every year thousands of international students come to USA for graduation/other higher degrees in Engineering, Medicine, Management, Law etc. The information below is focused on getting a Student visa (often referred as F1 or F-1 visa), some useful information around the college application procedure and prospects after you complete your study are also covered. Visa or immigration document allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of entry (ex Airport) and request permission from the U.S. immigration officer to enter the United States. STEP 1: EXAMS REQUIRED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR STUDENT VISA a) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): English is the national language of USA. Students must take that form to their nearest US consulate along with Passport, Visa fee, Form OF-156 (Application for a Nonimmigrant Visa), documents indicating evidence of financial support and documents proving sufficient ties to home country. One should explore the opportunity of scholarships given by Institutions to some students with high scores or exceptional ability in sports. Also students may qualify to work part time. Check your institution for those details. STEP 3: ENTERING USA At the port of Entry ( ex Airport), the students must present all the documents including passport, I-20, Documents from Institution. The immigration officer after verification will issue an I-94 Arrival/Departure Record that contains a unique number. Keep this document safe, probably attached to your passport. Once you arrive on campus, you should report immediately to the office that is responsible for assisting international students and scholars. STEP 4: LIFE / CAREER AFTER COMPLETING YOUR EDUCATION Often US companies/employers may come on campus to recruit appropriate students for their organization. If you are the one selected then the employer must file for your working visa ( usually referred as the H-1 visa). Good news !! US Govt. has a special H-1 quota presently at 20,000 visa’s (number can change with time) for students who do their graduation in USA. Perhaps you have also been brave enough to find a photograph they say it makes a big difference to the numbers of replies that you receive. 1. Congratulations - this is a bold step. Now stay in charge of the process ANTICIPATION, ANTICIPATION, ANTICIPATION However hard you try to be realistic everyone, on registering, will have some level of excitement at the anticipation of meeting someone on-line. We have heard all the stories, perhaps you have a friend or colleague who has met someone special this way and you want it to happen for you, too. You initially scan through the pages of potential people and begin to build up fantasies about who these people might be, and whether they might be interested in you. All this creates quite a head of steam and your rollercoaster ride has begun. Initially you find yourself logging on often to see if you there are any messages. 2. For some reason there is still, even in this internet age, a notion that the men should make the first approach and women worry about being seen as too pushy/forward if they send the first message. Here is a good moment to pause. Think about it, you have signed up; the purpose is to meet someone. That is the aim of the site so why would you play the role of reluctant flower and wait for someone to choose you? 3. Always be THE CHOOSER, there is a difference between being pro-active on your own behalf and being pushy. Learn the difference and respond to the people who welcome this. THE WAITING GAME - GETTING/NOT GETTING RESPONSES Now you may expect it to happen all at once, in fact some people find that when you are new to a site there will be a flurry of activity. Watch this, there are many who scan for new people and will flirt with anyone even without reading your profile. Take it slowly in the beginning, yes it is beginning to feel like the rollercoaster is going up at a fast rate. A real person has responded to you, so it must mean something. No -unfortunately it doesnt mean anything at this stage. Here is where you really need to keep the emotional brakes on. It is so easy to build up the fantasies into really big bells and whistles visions of your future together. On the other hand there might be a giant silence from the other end of the net; can you feel the rollercoaster taking a dive? Above all remember to live a life whilst you are waiting. Dont stay in all evening next to the computer in the hope that a reply will come through. Isnt it inevitable that the person you may have sent a message to has a life too and they have not seen your message yet or had the time to consider a response? Just because you have sent a message doesnt mean that you will get a response. Sad but true, you will soon learn that many people on these sites never respond and are just there to browse. Also not everyone who has a profile is a paid up subscriber to the service. 4. Stay realistic, get on with your life and have the internet site be just one of the things that you are doing to meet possible dates. I CANT BELIEVE IT - INAPPROPRIATE RESPONSES Yes it happens more often than we all would like, especially to women. That completely inappropriate response to your initial message, either it is over the top sexual innuendos or the other person is in love with you already and wants to meet you immediately. Time for those rollercoaster brakes again. Obviously the sexual innuendo may appear flattering but is this the first expression of interest you would like? Similarly someone who wants to immediately meet is probably erring on the too eager side and your antennae should be up. 5. Dont fall into the trap that any reply is better than no reply at all. If it does not feel appropriate to you for whatever reason do not pursue. CAN THEY BE BOTHERED LACKLUSTRE RESPONSES But much of the time you will probably receive rather lacklustre responses. This can be a disappointment in itself. After all, you have tried to send them an interesting, maybe witty reply with some questions and are hoping to find out more about them. What you get back neither responds to your questions nor asks anything about you. So why would you be interested in someone who is clearly not interested in you? 6. Dont hope that this person will change. If they are not interested in you right now, when will they be? Ditch the boring ones immediately. Dont settle for less than you really want. IS IT ME? Marketing Myth #3: Perception Is Not Reality

By Mary Eule This is one of the hardest concepts for business owners to accept. They waste countless hours trying to convince unyielding clients to accept their version of reality, which often prevents them from communicating their unique benefits; alleviating significant flaws and/or ignoring golden opportunities. It is vitally important that any one who has responsibility for growing a business or organization understand and embrace this critical tenet. It does not matter if outside perceptions are factual… because consumers behave based on decisions formed by attitudes founded on their beliefs, which are often subconscious. (If this sounds familiar, congratulations!) This has particularly dangerous consequences when companies are forced into an undesirable place primarily because they fail to communicate their unique benefits. Thus, their inside reality is aware of their distinguishing qualities but outside perceptions are clueless. In other words, the public may look at your business; your competitors businesses; and/or completely unrelated businesses and view them identically, good or bad. This means that they base their purchase decision solely on price or convenience. Why? Because they dont have any other information! Some companies can operate in this environment for a while but over time it gets them nowhere (except closer to extinction). Remember this, competing on price alone is the quickest way I know of to ensure that you will never be able to earn a substantial income let alone, what youre worth. It is a no-win situation and no matter how tempting, do not fall into that snare. And businesses will continue to compete in this way until they do something to alter their prospects perceptions! Avoiding the Commodity Ambush You must be willing to face and accept reality and as my daughter-in-law is fond of saying, and dont pretty it up! This is the first step in making sure you dont get lumped into the commodity pot. The worst (or best?) thing youll discover may be that your customers and prospects do indeed see you as similar, or identical, to others. Once you obtain this vital information, you must identify specific areas where your inside reality does not match outside perceptions. For instance, you may need to do a better job of educating the public about your exceptional qualities (i.e. service, delivery, product benefits, etc.) or conversely, you may need to fix gaps. Lets assume that youre the most knowledgeable, educated and competent financial advisor in your area, having earned and saved your clients much more than your competitors. At a networking event you give your business card to a qualified prospect in need of your services and you schedule an initial meeting in your office. However, when the prospect arrives the waiting room is bland and the sofa upholstery is threadbare; the rest rooms are in desperate need of cleaning; your receptionist is curt; your office is a mess and you cant find the forms you need. Then you spend the next hour reiterating the professional qualities you posses careful attention to details, reliable service, thoroughly researched advice, etc. Youre convinced that you have the know-how and abilities to provide the very best financial advice to him or her, but they choose another company. Why? Because there was a huge gap between what you said and what they experienced. Your words said, excellence and professional and your environment and staff said mediocrity and fly-by-night! As the saying goes, If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, its probably a duck. What does a dirty bathroom have to do with sound financial advice? In this case, everything So you can either argue the point (i.e. one has nothing to do with the other) all the way to the poor house or do whatever is necessary to create an office environment that reflects your level of professionalism. Alternatively, your customers may continue to choose you over a competitor because you consistently deliver more product or service value that youre not even aware of! And again, the only way to find this out for certain is to ask your repeat customers! For example, women may choose one comparable hair salon over the other because they are more careful schedulers and they never have a long wait. Presto! Instant differentiation handed to you on a silver platter! The third, and possibly the worst, perception gap brings us back to the commodity nowhere land. In order to transcend this place youll need to force an apples-and-oranges comparison between you and your competitors. You must design, execute and communicate such significant differences between you, that your customers would be foolish to take their business anywhere else, regardless of price. At this point, its enough to understand that this is an essential concept. Do not, however, worry about creating yours just yet Theres lots of help in later chapters, so hold on for now!
